A nation wide insulation grant
In response to global warming and the need to reduce energy consumption, the Australian Government has introduced an insulation grant scheme.
Under this initiative homes that currently have no insulation or less than 0.5 R value insulation can receive an insulation grant of up to $1200. Up to $1000 is available for rental properties.
This initiative is available to all Australian home owners. The duration of the scheme is from 1 July 2009 to 31 December 2011. Homes that have had new insulation installed between 3 February 2009 and 30 June 2009 are eligible to claim the rebate.
I’ve heard I can get free insulation. Is this true?
You must pay for your insulation up front. But yes, it could end up being free insulation because rebates of up to $1200 are available. And both government and industry estimate the average cost of insulation to a 3 bedroom home to be $1200.
Who is eligible?
Homeowners, landlords and renters are all eligible for this rebate. You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 years or over.
What and who are not eligible?
This rebate is not available for commercial premises. It is only available for new insulation to go into existing homes. It is not available for new homes or for extensions.
If you have already claimed assistance under the solar hot water rebate, since its increase to $1600 on 3 February 2009, then you are NOT eligible for the insulation grant.

Are there any other conditions?
From December 1, 2009, householders will be required to get two genuine quotes from two different insulation installers who are on the government’s Installer Provider Register, before they can claim their rebate from the government.
